Self-government is a feature of North America now, but it predates the arrival of settlers from Europe. Tribal nations had government systems that bear some similarities to what emerged from the Constitutional Convention of 1787.
And restoring self-government to tribes is an active process today. The Democracy Project at Southern Oregon University focuses on this topic in a session scheduled to go online this afternoon (March 11, 1:30 PM).
