The big railroads of the west were still being built in the 1880s. What became the Nevada–California–Oregon Railway was distinctly not one of them.
In fact, the N-C-O was not even a full-size line, opting to build a narrow-gauge route from Reno to Lakeview through Alturas. Only a few segments (now standard gauge) remain, but a new historical society has been formed to document the history of the line.
