When it's in session, school is a big chunk of a child's day. Not just the six-to-eight hours in the building receiving instruction, but also the time spent on homework and test preparation.

And it's not enough for some parents and students, they still want more. Private tutors and competitions and enrichment programs are examined by Pawan Dhingra in the book Hyper Education: Why Good Schools, Good Grades, and Good Behavior Are Not Enough.

He focuses on students who are already doing well in school, but push to reach even higher levels. We pick the author's brain about causes and effects.
