Managing The Siskiyous Through A Snowy Winter

It's the sign that strikes fear into the hearts of travelers: "Chains Required __ Miles Ahead."  Winter gets serious in the mountains of our region, and we got our first taste of that before Thanksgiving, when snow closed Interstate 5 in California for more than a day. 

Oregon passes get plenty of snow, and the two state departments of transportation work closely together to manage the road when winter closes in.

Gary Leaming with ODOT keeps an eye on the conditions on the Oregon side.  He visits with details of winter road maintenance and decision-making.
