A huge piece of fabric from the Super Bowl festivities this weekend in the Bay Area is coming to Eugene.
It’s grey, polyester, and weighs 2 tons. The cloth used to line a massive tent for a Super Bowl party on Treasure Island in San Francisco will be rolled up and trucked to St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County next week after the big game is over. St. Vinnie’s Executive Director Terry McDonald wasn’t surprised to get the call asking if the non-profit would take the fabric, so it wouldn’t end up in a landfill.
McDonald: “Well, St. Vincent de Paul of Lane County has a substantial reputation as being a somewhat unusual organization and that we’ll try and find the highest and best use for all kinds of things. We’ve worked in the Bay Area for a number of years on our mattress recycling operation down there. So they know that if nobody else will come up with a solution we will.”
McDonald says the fabric will likely be used in the fashion show St. Vinnies puts on in the spring. Mitra Chester is fashion designer for the organization. She also has some ideas for the cloth.
