The queer, bi-racial singer-songwriter has made a name for herself taking on complicated social issues. In contrast to a lot of musicians writing about heavy subjects with passion, she presents them as upbeat, catchy rock songs. In response to what she sees as a growing sense of inequality she says "The rulebook has been thrown out...It's time to be louder, be bigger, be brasher."

When playing solo, Kristen uses live-looping to create a full sound. Hear her perform solo and talk with Danielle Kelly about her life and musical career.

JPR Live Sessions are engineered by Jon Griffin of Luna Zen Studios and made possible with the support of Talent Club offering live music and cold drinks in a casual atmosphere in Talent, OR.
The innovative ukulele player stopped by to play some tunes and talk about making his most recent recordings.

Jake Shimabukuro grew up on Oahu and first started learning ukulele at the age of four. In 2006, as he was starting to get noticed, he recorded a video of the Beatles classic While My Guitar Gently Weeps. It is considered among the first viral videos and put his career into overdrive.

Known for his fast, complex playing style, he set out to take his instrument to new places. His use of effects and live looping allow him to explore a vast array of sounds, and his interest in music takes him across multiple genres.

His most recent album, Blues Experience, was a collection of blues and rock covers (and one original) he recorded with Mick Fleetwood, drummer and founder of Fleetwood Mac. Prior to Blues Experience, he released Jake & Friends, with a genre-bending cast of friends including Jack Johnson and Paula Fuga, Willie Nelson, Sonny Landreth, Lukas Nelson, Bette Midler, Billy Strings, and Ziggy Marley among others. Jon Anderson, the lead singer from Yes, joined him on a version of the Beatles tune A Day in the Life that showcases the creativity Jake brings to his sound.

Hear him talk about his technique and recording these albums plus live performances of Cause We've Ended as Lovers, Kula Blues, and The Legend of Joseph Kekuku - the latter being a tribute to the inventor of the steel guitar. Hearing his story inspired Shimabukuro to start playing ukulele with a slide.

JPR Live Sessions are engineered by Jon Griffin and made possible with support from The Talent Club offering live music and cold drinks in a casual atmosphere in Talent, Oregon.

Fantastic Cat is a supergroup of singer/songwriters whose individual careers we've been following for quite a while at JPR. They are Brian Dunne, Mike Montali - of the band Hollis Brown, Don Dilego, and Anthony D'Amato.

They're touring on their second album That's What I Call Fantastic Cat, a follow-up to the "award eligible" (as they say) The Very Best of Fantastic Cat. The group got together in New York after crossing paths at various gigs and festivals. They say, tongue in cheek, that they felt they were making too much money in their other endeavors and wanted to see what it would be like to work for 1/4 of the pay. On a more serious note, their collaborative efforts seem to bring out the best in each other.

Featuring poignant lyrics and tight harmonies Fantastic Cat takes turns on different instruments including drums and trade off lead vocals. Their banter makes for an entertaining live show.

Hear them perform 3 songs from Now That's What I Call Fantastic Cat, and talk about getting together, where they got their name and their ideas for naming albums in this JPR Live Session hosted by Dave Jackson and engineered by Jon Griffin.

JPR Live Sessions are made possible with support from The Talent Club offering live music and cold drinks in a casual environment in downtown Talent, Oregon.
Veteran Southern Oregon singer/songwriter Alice Di Micele joined us along with her band Force of Nature. She's getting ready for a solo tour that includes dates in Colorado and the Midwest.

With a powerful, dynamic voice, Alice Di Micele's sound combines many aspects of Americana from folk to jazz to blues to rock. She plays solo, in duos and trios, and in this JPR Live Session she performs with her band Force of Nature featuring Matt Spencer on bass, Andy Casad on guitar, and Nick Kirby on drums. The full band will be performing at Pheasant Field Family Farm in Medford on September 14.

Alice Di Micele's songs combine powerful commentary on social and environmental issues as well as reflections on her personal journey. In the last few years she released Every Seed We Plant, an album of original tunes, the title of which refers to Grandma Aggie, a Native American leader from Southern Oregon who died a few years ago. She followed it up with an album over cover songs Interpretations Vol 1. - with songs originally written by Christine McVie, Abbey Lincoln, Grateful Dead, Neil Young and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Alice's appreciation of Tom Petty is also evident in one of her side projects, the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers tribute band, Petty Thievery.

Hear her play songs spanning her long career and a conversation with Danielle Kelly in this JPR Live Session. His home studio is the historic OK Theatre in Enterprise where he has recorded and worked with a lot of our favorite PNW artists like Sera Cahoone, Shook Twins and John Craigie and the Northern California band Rainbow Girls.

He dropped by on his west coast tour before performing at the Trail's End Music Festival in Aetna, California.

Bart Budwig's songs are insightful with a subtle wit that turn simple everyday occurrences like a lost sock into a metaphor for relationships. With a religious background, Budwig had a period of introspection in his 20s where he examined his relationship with religion writing songs sometimes called secular gospel and perhaps sacrilegious gospel. Hear his song Jesus has Entered Your Neighborhood inspired by the notifications from a meal delivery app, and a couple of songs about the pitfalls of alcohol use, all with a kind of tongue and cheek humor as if he's letting you in on the joke.

JPR Live Sessions are made possible with support from The Talent Club, with cold drinks and live music in a casual atmosphere in downtown Talent, OR.

This live session was produced by Jon Griffin of Luna Zen studios and hosted by Dave Jackson.

Advance Base is the story-song synth-pop project of Chicago, IL singer/songwriter Owen Ashworth (formerly of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone). Using a two-handed arsenal of electric piano, Omnichord, samplers, effect pedals & drum machines, Ashworth builds minimalist, heavy-hearted, & nostalgia-obsessed ballads around his conversational baritone. The warm, electronic sound of Advance Base has been described as "lo-fi," "depressed" & "weirdly uplifting."

Tucson, Arizona interdisciplinary artist Karima Walker walks a line between two worlds. Aside from her long resume of collaborative work with artists in the diverse fields of dance, sculpture, film, photography and creative non-fiction, Walker has long nurtured a duality within her work as a musician, developing her own sonic language as a sound designer in tandem with her craft as a singer/songwriter. The polarity within Walker’s music has never been so articulately explored, or graced with as much intention, as on her new album, Waking the Dreaming Body.

Hear them talk about their careers, the Omnichord - an electronic instrument similar to an autoharp - and perform live in this JPR Live Session.

This JPR Live Session is made possible with support from Talent Club offering live music and cold drinks in a casual atmsophere in downtown Talent Oregon.
The Nashville-based singer songwriter and her band joined us on their west coast tour in support of her new album Queen of Time.

While growing up in Michigan, Lindsay Lou was taught to sing harmony by her Aunt Melody along with her cousin Harmony - Yes, that is a true story.

Her early vocal work has paid off in the gorgeous harmonies found on her latest record, Queen of Time. In college, she started attending open mics and teamed up with Joshua Rilko to form Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys. The pair eventually married. Their band played clubs and stages in Michigan crossing paths with other Midwest bluegrass pickers like Greensky Bluegrass and Billy Strings. Later she was part of the trio Sweet Water Warblers with May Erlewine and Rachael Davis.

Growing up, Lindsay was inspired by her grandmother who raised a large family and worked tirelessly to provide for the less fortunate. Before her grandmother passed away, Lou recorded several phone calls. You can hear some of their conversation on the track Love Calls on Queen of Time. The song Queen of Time itself is a reference to her grandmother.

In addition to her grandmother dying, Lou and Rilko divorced, all while dealing with the backdrop of the pandemic. These events lead her to do some soul searching where she discovered the concept of the divine feminine. This idea plays out on the new album in a co-written track with Billy Strings - Nothing's Working, a Maya DeVitry/Phoebe Hunt song - Nothing Else Matters, and By Your Side (Starman), that Nick Forster (E-Town host) asked her to play at a tribute to Jeff Austin of Yonder Mountain String Band.

Hear Lindsay Lou and her band perform songs from Queen of Time, give some insights into her writing, and talk about the events that lead up to Queen of Time.

Find more about Lindsay Lou at her website.

This JPR Live Session was engineered by Jon Griffin of Luna Zen studios, and made possible with support from the Talent Club, with cold drinks and great music in a relaxed atmosphere in downtown Talent, Oregon. That's where he began writing songs with guidance from Fame founder Rick Hall.

When he's not touring, LeBlanc shares his time now between Alabama and Norway where he's started a family. With influences like RL Burnside, Son House, Tom Waits and the Carter family, it's no wonder his own music is a rootsy mix of blues, Americana and rock with a bit of indie rock and folk for good measure. His latest release is Slow Lightning, the deluxe edition just came out with a cover of the Bruce Springsteen classic My Home Town, a song JR fell in love with as a kid.

In his fourth JPR Live Session he plays songs on his banjo and 1938 Kalamazoo guitar, and talks with Danielle Kelly about making his new record, his tour, and growing up in New York.

Hosted by Danielle Kelly

Engineered by Jon Griffin

Photos by Rich Zellman and Noah Bran-Linsday

As a kid, Stigers played clarinet and saxophone, and whenlegendary jazz pianist Gene Harris retired to Boise, Idaho and started hosting a weekly jam session, Stigers sat in and started absorbing everything he could.

It was actually Harris who encouraged Stigers to sing, and to make a go of it as a singer and songwriter. Soon after, Stigers moved to New York to follow his dream. His Arista Records debut, which featured his rich voice and soulful combination rock and pop, reached multi-platinum sales.

But Stigers wasn't interested in creating that type of music. So after a follow-up in 1995, Stigers ended up signing with Concord Records, and began a now twenty-year chapter of making jazz-leaning albums.

On This Life, Stigers takes a look back at home favorite songs from years gone by - some his own, some covers.

His performances combined songs and the stories of the songs, equal parts entertainment and education.

The success of the new venture (both internal and external) has led to a couple of traditional records released under his own name including his latest Folk Songs For Old Times' Sake, and a podcast called American Songcatcher.

He joined us from home to share a few songs and stories.

That pie tin, rubber band and stick led to a lifelong love of the instrument. As he played more, he got better. Much, much better. Being better led to even more enjoyment of the banjo.

Now, more than 30 years into a lauded award-winning career, the slide guitar and banjo virtuoso has returned to his first love with the new album called Decembering. Less a 'folk' album and more of a deep exploration of all of the styles of music banjo can occupy, Decembering was made in isolation with a remote team of stellar partners: Luke Price, Tristan Clarridge, Toddd Sickafoose, Rob Berger, Mike Marshall, Matt Flinner, Scott Amendola and more.

During our session, we talked about the history of the instrument, Furtado's successful sculpture series, and how he's forging ahead as a musician staring down yet another rash of concert cancellations due to the pandemic.

She's also been busy raising her son.

With the musical (and shows, and tours) on hold for the time being, Schneiderman found time to re-focus on her solo career. She'd been sitting on a handful of songs, had some new ideas she wanted to explore, and entered the studio for the first time as both artist and producer of her own album. Her intent was a more acoustic-leaning folk album. Crossfire is not that at all, Rather, it showcases the many facets of Schneiderman's musical history throughout the tracks.

She joined us from her home in Portland with the help of her husband Tony Furtado to share a few tunes from the new album.
