The great need for after-school programs in rural communities

Jen Rinehart - Afterschool Alliance
Jen Rinehart - Afterschool Alliance

Maybe we don't use the term "latchkey kids" much anymore, but upwards of eight million American children are without adult guidance in the hours between school and dinner time.

The Afterschool Alliance exists to work for more after-school programs to help advance children's needs, educational and otherwise. The alliance put out a recent report focusing on such programs in rural areas, or the lack of them.

Among other things, the report finds great variations in rural areas... they are not all-white mostly-farming communities.

Jodi Grant is Afterschool Alliance's Executive Director.

She lays out the report and the areas that need attention, while Brad Russell, CEO and Executive Director of Rogue Valley Family YMCA in Medford, gives a local perspective.
