Underground History: Exploring the first foods movement with the Umatilla Tribe

The agricultural land of the region is now taken up with farms and orchards and vineyards. That's a big change from the days when indigenous people roamed freely, hunting and fishing and collecting food from plants. Tribes all over the country are determined to bring back the foods of their ancestors; this is the First Foods movement.

It is the subject of this month's edition of Underground History, our monthly project with the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology.

Chelsea Rose of SOULA joins us, bringing Wenix Red Elk of the Umatilla Tribe, one of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR).

We hear about what it takes to restore a food system disrupted by white settlement.
