Behind the pink cars: the keys to the success of Mary Kay

You can be forgiven for not recognizing the name Mary Kay Ash. The company that bears her name only used the first two: Mary Kay, as in Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Mary Kay built an empire before she died 20 years ago, and Jennifer Bickel Cook was at her elbow through a big chunk of that time.

Cook wrote an admiring book called Pass It On : What I Learned from Mary Kay Ash.

Since the publication, Mary Kay Inc. filed a federal lawsuit against the author, claiming that she used copyrighted material from the company in the work.

If her lawyers let her talk to us, we get into some of the details of what drove Mary Kay to the top of her business.
