The role Islam played in the history of the Americas

Since September 2001 and even before, American Muslims have had to endure suspicion, at a minimum. And just imagine watching TV while a host labels adherents to your religion "fascists."

Omar Mouallem sticks up for the religion in which he grew up, even if he has often struggled with its tenets and interpretation.

The Canadian author and filmmaker details the history of Muslims in the New World in a new book,Praying to the West: How Muslims Shaped the Americas. And beyond history, the book points out the non-monolithic nature of Muslims in the West.

The author joins us for an overview.
