Simone Golob

We call it a truck, they call it a lorry. When we need to reach the truck/lorry engine, we open the hood, they open the bonnet. It's the same language--English--but it is used very differently on the two sides of the Atlantic Ocean.

Lynne Murphy, who grew up on this side of the pond and lives on the other side now, is uniquely situated to monitor the differences in language.

She blogs and tweets about it daily, and compiles her findings in the book The Prodigal Tongue: The Love-Hate Relationship between British & American English. We revisit our 2018 interview here.
