Before astronauts walked on the moon, they had to practice.  So years before the first moon landing, they walked around parts of Oregon.

The assumption in the early days of the Apollo program was that the moon would have a rocky volcanic surface, and Central and Southern Oregon features plenty of volcanic features, suitable for practice.

Oregon Public Broadcasting, OPB, explores the exploration in an episode of Oregon Experience called "Oregon's Moon Country."  OPB producer Kami Horton joins us with details of the research in this month's edition of Underground History.  Chelsea Rose, our partner at the Southern Oregon University Laboratory of Anthropology, returns for the journey.
