JPR Live Session: Patrick Watson

Ways To Subscribe

Montreal-based singer-songwriter Patrick Watson's family moved to Hudson, Quebec when he was four. As a child, he started singing in the church choir, and eventually studied jazz and classical piano as well as composition. His album Close To Paradise won the Polaris Prize - the biggest prize in Canadian music - in 2007.

Despite the style disparity, Watson and his band were selected to open a series of concert dates for James Brown, and Watson attributes much of his understanding of live performance, audience connection, and the soul of music from that experience.

Watson describes his new album Wave as "the feeling of having a wave knock you over when you realize that everything you have in life can be wiped away in a moment.." He says the songs are about how "sometimes you have to sing a love song to yourself when no one else will." Between some personal loss and some personnel changes in the band, Watson has managed to process it all and come out the back side energized to move forward with new sounds and new songs.
