Crews Quickly Stop The Spread Of A Wildfire In The Applegate

An air tanker dumps fire retardant on a small but quickly-growing fire in the Applegate Valley Tuesday evening.

UPDATE: WEDS. AUG 28, 9:45 a.m. ... The Gyda fire, burning along the 11000-block of Highway 238 in the Applegate Valley, is now 100% lined, and mop-up operations have begun. The fire is estimated to be 55 acres, burning on private and BLM land. GPS mapping is planned today, and may provide a more accurate measure.

ORIGINAL POST: WEDS. AUG. 28, 5:30 a.m. ... Fire crews quickly got a handle on a wildfire in the Applegate Valley west of Medford Tuesday evening.

The fire was first reported at shortly before 4:00 p.m. Engines, bulldozers, helicopters and air tankers were quickly brought in. By about 8:00, firefighters were able to line most of the area burned, saving a dozen homes.

The fire is located on Highway 238 between Ruch and Applegate. It’s estimated to be 55 acres. Two outbuildings were destroyed, but no evacuations were issued and no injuries have been reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
