JPR Live Session: Joshua Henry

Ways To Subscribe

Like many students, Joshua Henry first dipped his toe in the performing world via a high school production of The Music Man. His raw talent shone through from the very beginning, prompting his teacher to urge him to explore a possible career on stage.

Henry went on to study music and theatre at the University of Miami, and eventually moved to New York in 2006, landing roles in In The Heights, Hamilton, Scottsboro Boys and more. He's been nominated for three Tony Awards as well as a Grammy award for his musical theatre work, but on his debut EP called Guarantee, you'd be hard-pressed to guess his background.

Guarantee (while only a 4-song sampler) displays what producer Neff-U calls Henry's "full voice," and has Henry exploring every corner of his ability across a range of soul and R&B tunes, including an O'Jays cover. That kind of stretching is something Henry says a theatre performer rarely gets to explore while maintaining a demanding schedule of eight shows a week.
