Officials said children aged 5, 8 and 11 died in the shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday. A teacher was also killed.

5:30 p.m. — A bystander who saw the 16-year-old suspected shooter enter Silver Rail Elementary School followed him, confronted and fatally shot him, officials said during a press conference Thursday.

Officials confirmed three children — ages 5, 8 and 11 — are dead. A teacher died, as well. A 7-year-old and 54-year-old were hospitalized, officials said.

The details emerged during a press conference at Bend City Hall hours after the attack.

The suspected shooter, who officials have not identified, used a “long gun” during the attack, a category of firearm that includes rifles and shotguns. His connection to the school — if any — wasn’t clear.

The incident unfolded in the early afternoon. At 12:59 p.m., a person in a vehicle called 911 to report being shot at multiple times.

A dozen 911 calls quickly followed reporting that a “shooter had entered the building” of the elementary school, according to Bend Police Department Chief Mike Krantz. Dispatchers alerted law enforcement at 1 p.m.

The school went into lockdown at 1:01 p.m., Krantz said. He said the suspected shooter gained access to the school by firing at locked doors. It wasn’t clear where in the school he went before being killed.

The first officers arrived at 1:02 p.m., Krantz said.

“Moments later, an officer reported that the suspect had been shot by a community member who had seen the suspect enter the school, and pursued him into the school and engaged him,” Krantz told media.

The identity of the bystander was not immediately clear.

Officers then confirmed the suspect’s death, cleared the scene, and ultimately confirmed the fatalities, Krantz said.

5:15 p.m. — The suspect in a Thursday shooting at a Bend elementary school was a minor, four sources confirmed to OPB.

All four individuals who spoke to OPB are law enforcement sources with knowledge of the investigation. One of those sources said the suspected shooter, who died at the scene, was 16 years old.

It remains unclear what motivated the attack and how the suspected shooter was killed.

The sources also confirmed that one adult is among those killed, bringing the total number of fatalities to five. That includes the previously reported three children and the suspected shooter.

All four sources requested anonymity because the information has not yet been made public.

4:10 p.m. — Three children were killed in Thursday’s shooting at a Bend elementary school, three sources confirmed to OPB.

Police said earlier Thursday that the suspected shooter was killed at the scene.
