Feeling like her career as a performing a performing artist was done (small crowds, not connecting), Garrison Starr had gotten to a point where she couldn't separate herself from the general feelings of disappointment. But after stepping back, she started thinking differently about how her songs could generate revenue, and focused on songwriting instead of her live performance skills.
After penning numerous tunes for other artists that for one reason or another weren't getting recorded, Starr realized that instead of identifying as the writer coming to help others write songs, it was really that the those others helped Starr re-discover her ability to tell her own story. That body of work reignited the fire to make a new album.
On Girl I Used To Be, Starr holds little back, tackling previous life experiences and addressing the people of her past, but also acknowledging her own failures and inability to communicate her feelings at the time.
