JPR Live Session: Twisted Pine

Ways To Subscribe

Members of the eclectic folk/bluegrass/jazz ensemble Twisted Pine joined us from their separate pandemic locations to chat about their new album called Right Now, and how their sound has evolved from traditional bluegrass to the territory they currently occupy.

The journey from the band's early days as a "rad & trad bluegrass band" to where they are now has come via a healthy dose of influences from the likes of Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and Bela Fleck & The Flecktones — all artists who have pushed the boundaries of acoustic music.

Dan Bui (mandolin/vocals), Chris Sartori (bass/vocals), and Anh Phung (flute/vocals) - along with their fourth member Kathleen Parks (lead vocals/fiddle) - have been scattered since March due to the pandemic. But as it happens, Bui is a skilled audio engineer in addition to being an excellent mandolin player, so the separation hasn't stopped their ability to create music together. For our live session, they shared some fresh 'at-home' recordings of tunes from their new album called Right Now.

As FM Network Program Director and Music Director, Eric oversees many aspects of JPR's broadcast day. He still hosts the occasional Open Air or classical music shift, and is the driving force behind JPR Live Sessions - our popular series of live in-studio music performances and conversations.
