Late Winter Snowfall Creates Closures, Slick Roads

Liam Moriarty/JPR News
Southern Oregon University was one of a number of schools closed by a late winter snowfall in western Oregon and northern California. The weather made driving a challenge, as well.

Communities across southern Oregon and northern California were coated in a blanket of snow Thursday morning. It’s expected to stick around for most of the day.

Weather projections show about 1 to 3 inches of snow in the valleys of Jackson, Josephine, Douglas, and East Curry counties. Projections show about 3 to 6 inches of snow in the mountains, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The region got its heaviest snowfall between midnight and 8am on Thursday. It should continue snowing lightly until noon.

Drivers can expect snow-packed roads and low visibility around the region. There are Severe Weather Hazard warnings on Siskiyou Pass as well as the I-5 passes between Roseburg and Grants Pass, and weather officials say driving is “strongly discouraged.”
