Teachers And PPS Reach Agreement, Avert Strike
Portland Pubic School administrators say they've reached a "conceptual agreement" with the teachers union to avert a strike.
Superintendent Carole Smith says she looks forward to finalizing the tentative agreement later today. The announcement came after a 23 hour bargaining session with the state mediator. The negotiating teams agreed to take a break and reconvene later to put a tentative agreement in writing. Details of the agreement will not be released to the public before members of the Portland Association of Teachers have time to consider and vote on the contract. School officials say that Wednesday's school day will begin at the regular morning time, with an early release.
