Turning Deep-Fried Thanksgiving Turkey Grease Into Biofuel

I've never had deep-fried turkey, but I've heard it's delicious. It also requires several gallons of cooking oil. And when the cooking is through, it leaves behind a vat of used oil.

To biofuel companies, that's feedstock.

At least one biofuel maker would be happy to take those Thanksgiving leftovers.

Sequential Pacific Biodiesel – a company with cooking oil drop sites all over Oregon – is teaming up with Portland grocer New Seasons next week to make it easier to recycle used Thanksgiving turkey fry oil.

Oil dropped off at three New Seasons locations on the Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving will be picked up by Sequential and turned into biodiesel.

According to a life-cycle analysis by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, biodiesel made with used cooking oil has the smallest carbon footprint of any transportation fuel in Oregon.

Sequential has also pledged to donate a dollar to the senior meal delivery program Meals on Wheels for every gallon of oil collected at New Seasons.

To be a part of the oil-recycling event, take your used oil, cooled and packaged in a container with a secure lid, to one of the following New Seasons locations from 10 am to 6 pm Nov. 30 and Dec. 1:

After Dec. 1, of course, you can still drop off used cooking oil – from deep-fried turkey or any other fried foods – at Sequential's usual drop-off locations.
