Tribal Services Suffer Under Shutdown

If the government shutdown goes on too long, it will mean the end of services for the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians.

The Confederated Tribes have enough funding to last two to three weeks. For now, the tribes have funding to maintain police and health care services.

Tribal officials say a big problem for them is that they can't reach grantor offices to find out the status of some monies because those offices are closed due to the shutdown. And, they say, the tribes without casinos are getting especially hard hit because casino revenues can help them make ends meet.

The World Newspaper reports a Coquille official says they are currently unaffected by the shutdown, except they can't proceed yet on a new casino proposed in Medford.
