Programming Changes in July

Seven new shows make their debut on the various services of JPR beginning Saturday July 2nd. In all, five new programs will be added to the News & Information Service, including Freakonomics Radio, America's Test Kitchen, Inside Europe, Ken Rudin's Political Junkie, and a weekly investigative journalism series called Reveal. JPR's Classics & News Service sees the return of New Music From Bowling Green, and the show Sound Opinions debuts on JPR's Rhythm & News Service. We're excited to be able to offer these great new shows, and we hope they become a regular part of your weekend listening! Here's the skinny on the new shows!

N&I
Freakonomics Radio (Saturday 9am) ferrets out connections between seemingly unrelated things. The program explores the riddles of everyday life and the weird wrinkles of human nature—from cheating and crime to parenting and sports—using the tools of economics to explore real-world behavior. Host Stephen J. Dubner discovers the hidden side of everything in interviews with Nobel laureates and provocateurs, social scientists and entrepreneurs—and with his “Freakonomics” co-author Steve Levitt.

Inside Europe (Sunday 7am) is Deutsche Welle's weekly news magazine that explores the topical issues shaping the continent. No other part of the globe has experienced such dynamic political and social change in recent years. Inside Europe includes interviews with newsmakers and personalities, background features, and cultural reports from correspondents throughout the European Union.

Ken Rudin’s Political Junkie (Sunday 9am) brings a fresh take to political conversation — featuring energetic discussions, rich historical context, and plenty of bad jokes. Host Ken Rudin brings his years of experience on the campaign trail to the fore as he highlights notable moments in political history, and looks ahead to the biggest stories on the national scene. Political novices and junkies alike will gain new insights from a broad spectrum of journalists, analysts and newsmakers from across the country. Plus, listeners are invited to show off their own political knowledge with Ken’s weekly trivia questions and ScuttleButton puzzles. Combining Ken’s encyclopedic knowledge of political facts with his trademark humor, Political Junkie is the program that dares to make politics interesting and fun.

Reveal (Sunday 10am) is a weekly, one-hour investigative reporting program from The Center for Investigative Reporting and PRX. The first pilot program won a Peabody Award. Award winning producer Al Letson is the host of the show.Reveal won a 2014 Peabody award for CIR’s original investigation into the Department of Veterans Affairs’ role in over-prescribing opioid drugs to returning Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. The story put pressure on the VA and, as a result, the federal agency has reformed some of its most egregious prescription practices.

America’s Test Kitchen Radio (Sunday 3pm) is a food program for right now – filled with clear, practical information, without the gourmet fuss. The weekly hour is all about insights, tips and techniques that illuminate the truth about real home cooking. There will be some mystery, too, like why bad things happen to good recipes and the science behind good results. America’s Test Kitchen Radio host Chris Kimball will introduce you to an eclectic collection of test cooks and food experts from the Test Kitchen, and people who come at food and cooking from unique and useful perspectives, with rich stories to tell.

C&N
New Music from Bowling Green (Sunday 7pm) is a radio series devoted to living composers and their works. The program originates from the MidAmerican Center for Contemporary Music (MACCM), part of the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University in Northwest Ohio.  Since 1980, MACCM has been hosting some of the biggest names in modern music at the annual New Music Festival.  It also sponsors a multi-venue concert series called Music at the Forefront, which shines a spotlight on new and exciting young performers of contemporary music.

R&N
Sound Opinions (Saturday 8pm) is your one-stop-shop for smart and engaging music criticism and conversation. Each week hosts and nationally respected rock critics Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis talk about pop culture and music industry news, interview artists and bands, review new record releases and highlight their all-time favorite rock and roll. And, because on Sound Opinions, "everyone's a critic," listeners are invited to join in the debate.

Whenever new programs are added to the schedule, it means that it's also time to say goodbye to some things. In this case, the News & Information Service sheds the Sunday afternoon broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion and LeShow, plus a couple of early morning hours of the BBC World Service. The Rhythm & News Service drops LiveWire from the schedule.

As always, we welcome your comments and feedback.
