Carr Fire On The Move, Evacuations Expanded

The Carr Fire near Whiskeytown Lake in Shasta County tripled in size last night and today, threatening parts of Redding.  The evacuation zone has expanded, and a larger portion of California Highway 299 is closed to traffic.

Per Shasta County Sheriff, evacuations are in effect as of 4 PM in the following locations:

  • Everything in the County, north of Hwy 299W and west of the Sacramento River.
  • Everything from the intersection of Lower Springs Road and Swasey Drive and northwest of that intersection to Hwy 299.

Redding Police say there are NO evacuations in the city of Redding at this point.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s office urges people to take the fire evacuations seriously.  An emergency shelter has been set up at Shasta College, replacing one arranged at Shasta High School.  The high school, north of 299, is now in the evacuation zone.

Highway 299 is closed to westbound traffic at Buenaventura Boulevard, and closed to eastbound traffic at Buckhorn Summit.

The fire--called the Carr Fire--started from a vehicle breakdown near the Carr Powerhouse by Whiskeytown Lake on Monday.  Late this afternoon, Cal Fire updated acreage burned to 28,763, an increase of nearly 9,000 since this morning.
