Redding's Classics & News Outage Resolved
The Classics and News signal in Redding experienced a prolonged outage last week and we want to explain what happened. The conversion of JPR’s transmission system to HD digital radio has involved replacing virtually all of the microwave transmitters that relay our signal to our main transmitters and translators. The new system has proven less robust than its predecessor and, as a result, we have taken numerous steps to harden the system – consisting of installing new, larger microwave dishes (as large as 10 feet in diameter) and constructing one new tower –in advance of winter. We have been heavily occupied racing the weather to complete that work before snowfalls prevented it.
Simultaneous with that construction, one of the older microwave systems that feeds the Redding Classics and News translator began experiencing intermittent failures. While we did go to the Redding site early last week to make repairs, all was working properly when we arrived so we couldn’t diagnose the problem. When the unit failed completely later in the week, it became clear that it was not one for which we had backup equipment and we had to locate parts and have the unit quickly repaired at a regional service depot. As soon as it was available, we visited the site this past Saturday to make repairs.
We apologize for the outage. We certainly would like to have responded more quickly but the weather, other challenges, and the nature of the outage combined to produce a longer interruption than anyone would have wanted.
At this time we believe the Classics and News signal in Redding is operating normally. Please let us know if that isn’t the case.
