The JPR Community Calendar is an easy way to spread the word about community events taking place in Southern Oregon and Northern California. Event information posted by qualified non-profit organizations will be used by JPR to create on-air public service announcements. There's no need to send a written press release! All event information will become "live" on the calendar after being approved by JPR (usually within 48 hours). To post information about your event click on the "POST AN EVENT" icon in the left hand navigation column.

Details:Haitian Artwork At The Northwest Nature Shop The Northwest Nature Shop offers beautiful sculptures carved from recycled oil drums made by artists in Haiti. These sculptures are a fair trade product insuring the artisans in Haiti are paid a fair living wage for their work. In Haiti the traditional art of converting oil drums into wall sculptures shows the talent, creativity and resourcefulness in the face of dire economic circumstances. The Northwest Nature Shop has carried these beautiful sculptures for several years but upon hearing about the January 12th earthquake in Haiti they contacted the fair trade organization who imports the sculptures to increase the order to further support the artisans in Haiti. The art collective of 50 artists, all of whose homes were destroyed in the January 12th earthquake are leaders in their respective communities. All of the artists have lost family members and are striving to get back on their feet to produce again. Currently they are living in temporary housing of make-shift tarps. The support of their artwork directly benefits the Haitian artisans and gives them the opportunity to do their traditional artwork while supporting themselves and their families. The goal of the Fair Trade Federation is to improve the standard of living of the world’s most economically disadvantaged artisans. The Northwest Nature Shop just received a shipment that had been sent out before the earthquake and these are on display for sale at the Northwest Nature Shop, 154 Oak St. Ashland OR. 100% of profits from the sale of the sculptures goes directly to the artisans. Store hours are 10 am – 6 pm Monday through Saturday and 11 am- 5 pm Sunday. For more information call the Northwest Nature Shop, 541-482-3241.
